Living in China and feeling a bit hungry?

You’ve probably seen the yellow delivery motorbikes everywhere. Navigating food delivery in China using the Meituan app (美团) can feel like cracking a secret code if you don’t speak the language, but it’s actually incredibly fast and convenient once you know where to tap.

Here is your simple English guide to mastering online ordering and getting your Waimai (外卖) delivered like a local!

1. Start at the Home Screen

When you first open the app, you’ll be greeted by the Meituan home page. To start your food delivery journey, look at the very first icon in the top left corner.

The “Waimai” Icon (外卖) is the icon featuring a little yellow kangaroo. Tap this to browse thousands of restaurants, bubble tea shops, and snacks near you.

2. Find Your “Command Center”

Once you’ve placed an order, you need to know how to track it. Look at the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen:

The “Mine” Tab (我的): This is the smiley face icon on the bottom right.

The “Orders” Button (订单): Within the “Mine” section, or directly on the bottom bar, look for the clipboard icon. This is where you can view your order history and current status.

Sometimes it looks a little different. Don’t worry, you can always find it!

3. Real-Time Tracking & Updates

One of the best features of ordering food in China is seeing exactly where your driver is.

The Message Hub (消息): Tap the speech bubble icon at the bottom.

This section provides real-time notifications about your delivery progress. If your driver is nearby or if there’s a delay, you’ll find the updates here.

4. Communication: Your Three Lifelines

If you need to change something or the driver is lost, use the communication buttons on the order details page:

  • Contact the Merchant (联系商家): Use this to talk to the restaurant directly if there is an issue with the food.
  • Contact the Delivery Person (联系骑手): Tap this to call or message the driver (Rider) if they can’t find your building.

5. Pro Tip: The “No-Call” Hack (Using Remarks) 💡

If you’re worried about the language barrier or high long-distance/roaming charges on your phone, use the Remarks (备注) field when checking out.

You can copy and paste this phrase:

“外国人听不懂中文,不要打电话,放在门口。” (I’m a foreigner and don’t understand Chinese. Please don’t call, just leave it at the door.)

This ensures a stress-free delivery without the need for a phone conversation. Just remember to check your door so you don’t forget your delicious meal!

Quick Tips for Fast Delivery:

  • Keywords: When searching, use names like “Starbucks” or “KFC” in English, as many major brands are searchable this way.
  • Address Accuracy: Make sure your building number and floor are clearly marked in your profile.
  • Stay Alert: Drivers will often call you when they arrive. If you hear “Wei? Meituan Waimai!”, it’s time to eat!
